You know how sometimes you can have a friend or a family member who can change moods based on the smallest things? Well, that is my websites. They are really touchy sob's.

I always knew that small changes could make a big difference. I once added an extra space between two lines at the top of my site and doubled my conversion rate. I once added a new ad unit to the top of my site and greatly increased the click through rate of a different ad unit on the same page.

Because small things make such a big difference, I use a good stats program to keep an eye on everything. However, most of my sites are based on user generated content with the best content being promoted ot the front page.

Since most of my visitors come to the front page first, this means my conversion rates are based on how the new content does. It would be nice to just have a set front page with a tested conversion path and rate, but I really believe in having updated content. This means I will always have the headache of a fluctuation conversion rate based on things I know I can't understand.

I have found myself not putting new content on the front page when things are working. This hurts the goal of updated content, but it is hard to argue with a steady flow of revenue. I try to make changes that are similar to the old content, but it always throws things into a bingo roller with a new set of balls coming out.

I'm not sure there is anything I can do. I just have to understand that my websites are touchy and I will need to learn how to get along with them.

I know what you mean. I also have "relationship" issues with my sites.

Not only do I see major changes in click through rates and conversions based on my site design and content, but my traffic sources are also really different in the rates they produce.

Also, have you ever noticed higher click through rates and conversions around the 1st and 15th of each month? Yep, payday means people have a new load of money in their accounts and they go shopping online.
