Are you a digital publisher or a digital marketer?
The basic difference is that a digital publisher has something they want to share with the world. A digital marketer is trying to make money on the internet as their primary goal.
Most people end up being a little bit of both, but your starting point will influence many of your decisions.
A digital publisher already has a passion for the content, art, music, etc... they want to share via the web. They just need to figure out how to get people to notice them and hopefully figure out a good way to make some money while doing it - or maybe money is not even a consideration. They want people to enjoy and share their content.
A digital marketer wants to make money. The content they produce often has nothing to do with their passion or interests. They want to attract visitors and generate ad clicks or sales.
Which one are you? Do you have a passion for content that you desperately want to share the world?
Are you simply trying to find a way to make money on the internet?
For most people who visit sites on the internet, the difference is often obvious. The internet is a better place if there are more publishers and fewer marketers. Digital publishers treat people as honored guests. Digital marketers treat visitors as mice who are being hearded into their mouse traps.
My suggestion to you is to be a digital publisher. Find what you are passionate about. Create web content that you are proud to share.
