paul Motivation From Inc. Magazine

I just finished reading the current issue of Inc. Magazine. I enjoy reading it because it gives me motivation and ideas from other people who are starting businesses. Sometimes I get frustrated because some of the success stories remind me that i am not a success story as of right now. However, seeing people succeed motivates me to reach that point. My favorite article in the current issue was an interview with a wine salesman. It reminded me of my days making lots of phone calls in various sa… Continue

Willie The Internet Is The Primary Medium

Goodnight newspapers. Goodnight tv. Goodnight magazines. Goodnight radio sleeze. The old lady is whispering hush because the internet is now the primary medium.

How could the internet not become the primary medium? All the other mediums are passive forms of media where someone chooses what content is available and then spoon feeds it to us as they please.

The internet is an open and active medium where we choose the when, what, where, and how.

Will there be televisions… Continue

Willie My Websites Are Really Touchy

You know how sometimes you can have a friend or a family member who can change moods based on the smallest things? Well, that is my websites. They are really touchy sob's.

I always knew that small changes could make a big difference. I once added an extra space between two lines at the top of my site and doubled my conversion rate. I once added a new ad unit to the top of my site and greatly increased the click through rate of a different ad unit on the same page.

Because small… Continue

Nathan Andover I Want To Make A Difference

I just read the article in Inc Magazine about the founder of Toms Shoes. I wish the article was more about the business and less about the life of the founder, but the article gave me great motivation.

I want to make a difference.

This is something I have always wanted to do. I have started many peace and political websites hoping to make a difference. The problem is that these sites took a lot of my time, energy, and money, but rarely made a difference. Arguing political po

Nathan Andover A Discouraging Discussion With A Share A Sale Representative

I had a chance this week to talk with a representative from Share A Sale. The rep is in charge of helping publishers and affiliates like me achieve better results. I was excited about the conversation because this rep would know what was working and what was not working. He had the knowledge about which publishers make the most sales and how they are doing it. Unfortunately, I ended the conversation with less enthusiasm than I had going in. I figured he would tell me that most of the top publ… Continue

Nathan Andover Tough Decision - Shut Down A Site?

I have always had the philosophy that I would start a whole bunch of sites in order to see what works. My problem now is that I know what works, but I have a bunch of sites that kinda work. I already shut down a few of my sites that were not working or I had no interest in. One thing I figured out is that it is tought to work on a site if you don't have any interest in the subject matter. Now I am down to my best sites, but I still wonder if I should close down a few more and really focus on… Continue

James Scott Add A Facebook Badge To Your Site

If your website or business has a page on Facebook, you can promote the page with a Facebook badge placed on your site.

This allows people to "like" your page on Facebook.

You get more people connected to your Facebook page and your Facebook updates will show on their walls. When they "like" your page, this update will be sent to all of their friends allowing a nice word of mouth referral to your site.

Here's the simple… Continue

OICUAM2 Google Still Allowing Misleading Ads

I just saw a high traffic website that had Google ads on the bottom of the page. The ads were all for acai berry and teeth whitening offers. The domain names looked like they were from television news stations. Since I have been doing online marketing for so long, I know that these ads are misleading scam offers. These are not news sites or real blogs or real testimonials. These ads are for free trials of products that are not very effective. These free trials start when you arder the product w… Continue

James Scott A Problem With Online Advertising

One of the major problems with online advertising is that it leads publishers to focus on the ads instead of producing quality content. The most extreme case of this is when you get to a page that is all ads. The website owner has basically trapped you in a dead end of ads where you can either click on an ad or back out. When Google AdSense rules were changed to require some sort of content, web publishers started posting small amounts of keyword infested content that was often wrapped around… Continue

Willie Happy To Avoid Censored Chinese Internet

I've been following the story about how Google is probably pulling out of the Chinese online market.

I think part of this decision is due to the lack of Google wanting to censor their listings according to the dictates of the Chinese government. I'm sure it also has to do with the fact that Chinese officials give preference to Chinese companies who tow the communist party line.

While researching the topic because of an interest in Google, I also came away from my research w… Continue

James Scott Sometimes Things Don't Make Sense

I made a change on my site today that made so much sense to me. It would make things better for my visitors and allow them to visit more pages. After making the change, I watched my stats plumment. Visitors went to fewer pages and spent less time on my site. It doesn't make sense, but the numbers don't lie. This teaches me again that I have to rely on my stats instead of relying on my rational thoughts. It also reminds me how important it is to have a good states program on my site. It also r… Continue

OICUAM2 Focus On What Works

One thing I am slowly learning is that I need to focus on what works. Sometimes we can get stuck working on things we think should work even when they don't work. The internet doesn't always make sense. Online newspapers should make more ad revenue compared to print ad revenue, but the online revenue is paltry. I would think that financial sites would make good ad revenue, but they dont. I think this is primarily because financial ads are a little spammy. Also, the site visitors don't have a… Continue

paul Google Analytics Time Of Day Report

There are two ways in Google Analytics to see what hour of the day visitors are on our sites:

The first is the easiest way with the best visual graph:

1. In Analytics, click on "Visitors" in the left column.

2. Click on "Visitor Trending"

3. Click on "Visits"

4. In the up

paul Online Marketing Acronym Definitions - CPA, CPC, etc...

When people first get involved with online marketing, the numerous acronyms can get a little confusing. Here's a general breakdown of the major ones: ROI (return on investment) - One of the most important ones since we won't be in business long usless we can get more money back from what we are spending on ads or other business efforts. PPC (pay per click) - Usually associated with online advertising. You only pay when someone clicks on your ad. CPC (cost per click) - Sim… Continue

James Scott Integrate Your AdSense & Analytics Accounts

I highly recommend that everyone should integrate their Google AdSense and Analytic accounts. It is really easy to do. Once you integrate your accounts, you just put a piece of tracking code on your site on top of your pages before the first AdSense ad. When you look at your Analytics account, you will then also see AdSense earnings information. You will be able to see what traffic sources and keywords are generating the most Adsense revenue. This is great information to have that wasn't avail… Continue

paul Post Holiday Bump

I had a nice boost in traffic and revenue yesterday. I was hoping it was a new Google ranking sending free traffic, but it was just a boost in traffic from the normal sources. Saturday's are usually my worst day of the week. There must have been a lot of people spending some time online on the first day after Christmas. Looking for deals and moving on to the next purchase decisions after the holiday. I went to bed last night not knowing why my revenue went up. I only had time to see the revenu… Continue

paul Nice To Have Some Revenue Again

I'm back on the upward revenue trend. After a couple of years of living off past earnings, I was getting close to running out of money. I've been trying different things in a desperate attempt to find a solid source fo revenue. Just as the money was about to run out, I think I have found something that is working. I can't reveal my source of traffic, but I get a good chunk of traffic each day. This has allowed me to do some testing on one of my sites. Three months ago, I was pretty disappointe… Continue

lea Learning Something New Every Day

I've been experimenting with websites for a little over a year. It is amazing how much I have been learning in that span of time. There is so much to learn about how to do business online and new things keep happening every day. The most important thing I have learned is to not be in a hurry to spend money. It is really easy to lose a lot of money when buying traffic before understanding what is going on. After an initial loss, I have been trying to get some free traffic. This has allowed me t… Continue
