Digital Publishing Vs. Digital Marketing

Are you a digital publisher or a digital marketer?

The basic difference is that a digital publisher has something they want to share with the world.  A digital marketer is trying to make money on the internet as their primary goal.

Most people end up being a little bit of both, but your starting point will influence many of your decisions.

A digital publisher already has a passion for the content, art, music, etc... they want to share…

Quality Content Should Be Rewarded

We all know the saying that content is king. However, is it just any type of content or does it need to be quality content?

One reason I'm asking this is because I saw the conversation in the forum about content farms. People upload very poor quality articles to content farms because the high authority of these content farms gives the articles a higher search engine placement. I'm glad to see that Google is starting to reduce the authority given to these content farms.

Add A Facebook Badge To Your Site

If your website or business has a page on Facebook, you can promote the page with a Facebook badge placed on your site.

This allows people to "like" your page on Facebook.

You get more people connected to your Facebook page and your Facebook updates will show on their walls. When they "like" your page, this update will be sent to all of their friends allowing a nice word of mouth referral to your site.

Here's the simple… Continue

A Problem With Online Advertising

One of the major problems with online advertising is that it leads publishers to focus on the ads instead of producing quality content.

The most extreme case of this is when you get to a page that is all ads. The website owner has basically trapped you in a dead end of ads where you can either click on an ad or back out.

When Google AdSense rules were changed to require some sort of content, web publishers started posting small amounts of keyword infested content that was… Continue

Sometimes Things Don't Make Sense

I made a change on my site today that made so much sense to me. It would make things better for my visitors and allow them to visit more pages.

After making the change, I watched my stats plumment. Visitors went to fewer pages and spent less time on my site. It doesn't make sense, but the numbers don't lie.

This teaches me again that I have to rely on my stats instead of relying on my rational thoughts. It also reminds me how important it is to have a good states program… Continue

What Would You Do If You Could Start Over?

What would you do if you could start over? Doing business online keeps changing so I'm sure many of us have made a lot of mistakes over the years. For me, I would not have spent so much time creating content on other people's sites in a hopeless quest for links.  I spent way too much time commenting on forums and blogs and writing articles for Squidoo, Yahoo Answers, eZineArticles, etc... It was bound ot happen that Google would figure out a way to discount links that we were creating…See More

If you look at the stats, the content farms have gone way down in the search results.  If you haven't seen this yet or heard about this, please stop building content on content farms and start building content on your own sites.

Tom McCann commented on James Scott's blog post 'Quality Content Should Be Rewarded'
Quality content should be rewarded with good search rankings, good ad revenue, and repeat visitors. Repeat visitors will reward quality content, but the search rankings and ad revenue are not being kind right now. To see the problem with the…

James Scott replied to OICUAM2's discussion 'Goodbye Link & Content Farms'
The link farms make sense because it is pretty obvious that people are trying to game the system by selling links or by creating huge directories of links. The content farms are little tougher to figure out. Yes, I hope Google stops rewarding…

I highly doubt it. First, I like the idea of doing it myself and being able to say I am a self made man who built something on my own. Second, I am a control freak who doesn't want o bring other people into my business. I don't even want…
