What is working for you in terms of making money online.

I know people won't share all of their secrets, but I thought we could share what is working for us in general terms.

I got this idea from reading the post about the Problogger revenue breakdown. It was interesting to see that he makes a lot fo money off the AdSense ads on his photography site and also from affiliate offers on his problogger site. Also interwsting to see how diverse his income sources are with speaking fees, memberships, and a jobs board.

For me, I have a shopping site with a high ranking keyword for something related to underwear. I know, it is is funny that I do all this work to set up tons of categiroes thinking I will sell everything under the sun from my shopping site and all I sell each day is underwear. Still, it is nice to see the affiliate sales each day. I have my fingers crossed that the page will continue to rank high in Google.

My shopping site is not doing well otherwise. I have few visitors other than the ones coming in from the underwear keyword. There is a lot of competition in the shopping niche so I'm wondering how much more effort I should be putting into it.

See how the problogger guy is making so much money off his AdSense ads makes me think maybe I should be making more informational and content sites with ads on them.

What sites and online efforts are working for you?

Well, for me, I have one site that has a pretty steady flow of traffic. Unfortunatley, I haven't had success in increasing this flow of traffic.

It is a content site that had both affiliate links and AdSense links on it. I tried pushing the afiliate links really hard because it is a niche with a high sales average and big commissions. I found a design that led to a ton of clicks into my affiliate merchants, but I ony got one sale.

I changed the design to favor the AdSense units and this was very successful. It took a lot of testing, but now I have a steady click through rate each day. The AdSense ads are working so well that I keep deleting affiliate links since they only seem to take people away from my site with nothing coming back to me.

I wish I could expand the source of traffic I have. The people are real, they go to a lot of pages and they click on ads. Since I have had no luck expanding the traffic, my main goal now is to impress the hell out of them so they return to my site and tell other people about it.

Most of my other sites have had poor performance and this is primarily due to a lack of traffic.
It is sad for me to report that nothing is working for me.

I've been trying lots of things and nothing is working.

I thought my goal should be to write as much content as possible, but I'm not getting a lot of traffic from Google. Even worse, the traffic I do get from Google converts worse than the traffic I get from other places. This makes it difficult for me to find the motivation to write content each day.

The good news is that I have been reducing the number of sites I am working on. I started with lots of sites because I didn't know what was going to work. Now I have a better idea of what works and what doesn't. Hopefully this means I will be putting my time and effort into sites that will give mem a greater return for my time and effort.

Some people would think that I should give up, but I really enjoy what I am doing and I have been learning so much about doing business online. I also get motivation in hearing that I am not alone in having difficulties making money online. I just watched a news report about the Huffington Post where it all sounded great with huge numbers of monthly visitors, but at the end of the report they said the site isn't profitable yet.

Hopefully, more ad spending will come online and business models for online content will grow stronger. If that happens (and that is what I am betting on) then I will have sites ready to reap the rewards.
