Traffic Generation Brain Storm
Let's have a brainstorm for the best ways to generate traffic to a website.
The big ones of course are to have a good link worthy site and to create lots of unique content to attract search engine traffic. Since Google has 70 % of the internet users searching from their site, we need to figure out how to get a piece of this action.
I tried print ads in newspaper and magazine classified actions, but I didn't have much success. I'm thinking of putting my web address on my car somehow, but I know that won't take me to the promised land.
I've tried posting content and links on Yahoo Answers, Squidoo, and a few article sites, but didn't get much traffic. I also tried posting comments on blogs and forums, but the traffic I got didn't justify the amount of time I spent visiting these sites and posting content.
What other traffic generation tips are you willing to share with a newbie like me?

I think the only way to get to the promised land is to have a site that spreads through word of mouth or gets a really good listing on a popular search keyword. Both of these options are achieved by a dedicated process of creating quality content.
I agree that offline ads don't work very well. You can get some trafic from newspaper or magazine ads, but print ads cost a lot of money compared to what most people make online. It is rare for it to pay off. Online ads allow people to click immediately with good tracking potential. Offline ads require people to remember the web address and get to the site later when they are online.

I agree that good content and good links is the best way to get good traffic - both from word of mouth recommendations and also from Google search results.
What doesn't work is the "submit to thousands of search engines" and "thousands of visitors for $10" type of offers. These are basically all scams.
PPC works well if you can get a good ROI from it and if you can actually get in good enough graces to be allowed to buy traffic.

I tried article writing and making pages on Squidoo, but didn't have a lot of luck. I had a couple pages on Squidoo that ranked well in the search engines, but I couldn't get people to click through to my site. I tried putting links and different calls to action all over the page, but few people clicked through to my site.
This experience led me to believe that my time is better spent on creating pages and content on my site. I have had a few of my pages start ranking well in Google. It isn't huge trafffic, but it is about the same amount of traffic I was getting through Squidoo. The main difference is that I get the advertising revenue from the pages that rank well instead of Squidoo giving me a tiny revenue share from their advertising revenue.
The main problem is that creating content and getting links in order to wait for Google search result rankings is a long process with very little immediate results. However, if it works well, then people are very happy they went through the effort.
My feeling about his is that when I search for some of the top keywords in my niche, there are some bad sites that rank well. I have to figure that Google will figure out how to put the best sites in the top spots. As long as their are bad sites ahead of me that shouldn't be there, I will continue to make improvements to my site and hope Google rewards that effort.

I got excited when I saw that eBay opened their own classified ads site, but was quickly saddened when I figured out you can't post links.
The eBay Classifieds program is a rebranding of the Kijiji classified ad site that was purchased by eBay.

I just tried posting ads on a bunch of online classified ad sites, but I didn't get very much traffic. Not worth the effort. I found a list of classified ad sites in a few different articles, but nothing compares to Craigslist. Seems like Craigslist is the only one worth the effort and even Craigslist can be difficult and hit or miss.

I'm reconsidering the effort of commenting on blogs and in forums.
I have a new site I am working on. I want some traffic so I can begin testing how the design is working. I went to a few blogs to leave some comments, but it reminded me of past tests that didn't yield very good results.
It is a lot of work, I usually can't leave my direct link (I need to have my name linked to my site) and I would imagine that some of my comments end up getting deleted.
I know that I won't get the immediate traffic, but I'm trying to convince myself again that my time is better spent writing content on my own sites. As in right now..... I'll be back to talk with other people about the effort of making money online, but I need to spend more time writing content on my own sites.
