Learn How To Do Business Online

When you put together a website, are you generally thinking and planning for short-term profits or long-term profits?

I would imagine that most people who are creating landing pages for PPC traffic are building lots of sites for the goal of getting some short-term profits.

For me, I am trying to avoid the PPC game (where it is one and done) by building good sites that will grow and improve over time. I want people to bookmark and return to my sites.

What about you? Are you building for the short term profits or focusing on building long-term value?

Well, I guess I have to say I am doing both. Ideally, I want to work on building long-term value, but I need some immediate income in order to keep myself afloat.

Thankfully, I don't have a lot of expenses right now so I can bootstrap my business efforts. I am seeing growth and can't wait for the long-term value I am building to translate into some real profits. I just hope I can keep this going long enough to get to that point.

Doing both is quite difficult because doing one or the other is also very difficult. I'm not exactly sure how to make money in the short term and I'm also not exactly sure how to make money in the long term.

Don't feel too bad about this lea, lots of people are having trouble making money online.

This is why I am trying to think about long-term ideas. The technology and ad revenue will continue to get better. Most newspapers have more people reading their online version, but make 90% of their revenue from their print editions. This should change over time as advertisers will realize they need to spend money online in order to reach the audiences they are trying to reach. Some are already willing to spend money online, but the structures for doing so are still immature.

I agree that the online environment should get better over time with more ad money transitioning to the web, but this will also bring more competition.

I tried the short-term profit game and did pretty well a few years ago. The problem is that Google made some changes and I was no longer able to buiy traffic. I found myself back at square one. Now I am focused on building sites instead of just landing pages.

Ahhh yes. The ol Google slap. Just when you think things are going well, Google makes a change and all, most, or some of your traffic disappears over night.

So nice though when it works the other way. What a feeling to log into your stats program and see lots of new traffic because Google bumped a ranking up on a popular keyword. This actually happened to me today so I got really excited until I saw that the traffic was coming into a page that has very little monetization potential. Oh well, time to keep building more pages and hope I get a "good" page on top of the organic listings.
