Learn How To Do Business Online

I'm trying to get more traffic to my site.

One thing I have seen recommended is to post comments with my link on forums and blogs.

This has not gone well so far.

First, it takes a lot of time to visit a bunch of blogs and forums and write something.

Second, after I write something, it sometimes doesn't show up on the blog or forum. This usually happens on blogs where the blogger has to approve of comments. I'm sure my comments are good, but they probably don't like my link back to my site.

Even once I get a few comments onto blogs and forums, I am not seeing a lot of traffic coming from those links. Even the traffic that does come to the site doesn't do much more than take a quick look and back out. I get a few good visits where people actually stick around, but these are few and far between.

The other reason I try to post on blogs and forums is to get some links back to my site. However, I think most blogs and forums are set up with "no-follow" rules. This means that search engines don't follow or count these links anyway.

Even if the search engines did follow these links, I'm sure the wouldn't give much weight to them. The idea of links is that someone else thinks enough of your site to link to it. Google and other search engines must have figured out by now that posting our links on other sites doesn't equal any type of trust or recommendation for our sites.

This makes me think that the effort of posting on other blogs and forums as a marketing strategy is not worth it.

Do you post on other blogs and forums?

Do you think the effort is worth it in terms of marketing effectiveness?

I have a list of forums and blogs I post on.

I also don't think it is worth the immediate marketing benefits (traffic and links), but I like to have a presence on selected sites so people in my industry get to know me.

I also just enjoy participating on blogs and forums. I get ideas from the discussions for things I want to write about.

Thanks for your reply paul.

I agree that I've gotten some ideas for articels by spending time on other blogs and forums, but I wish that time spent would translate into more people visiting my site.

I think Google is getting wise to the problem of people spamming other blogs and forums so they are not counting these links anymore. As for people following the links and visiting the site, I have had less than satisfactory results.

Well, I have pretty much stopped posting on other blogs and forums for marketing purposes. I still post on forums like this one where I am trying to get and share information.

The only other posting I do is on sites with high traffic. Sometimes I will search for my main keywords and see what comes up first in the search results. If the site listed first has a comment section, I will post something to see if some traffic will come my way.

Good luck James.

Getting traffic has been my biggest problem.

I'm seeing a little more traffic from Google organic listings these days, but not much.

Google has over 60% of the initial search traffic on the web so breaking into their traffic would be huge. Playing the AdWrods game is tough unless you have the right type of site. Playing the SEO organic search results game is also tough.

I try to focus on making the best sites possible and hopefully Google will reward me, but it hasn't happened yet in any major way.

I've tried some offline advertising, but didn't have much luck.
