Google Domination Of Search And Search Results
Google is the master of the internet right now. Almost 70% of people use Google to search for what they are looking for.
I'm wondering how long it will take before Google decides they shouldn't send people away. For example, if you are searching Google for videos, you will probably see results for YouTube or Google Video along with some others. As they buy more companies in more markets, many searches being done will lead to Google owned results.
The reason I have been thinking about this is because I just heard that Google is buying the review site Yelp. This adds another huge category of search results where Google can point to one of their own websites.
Since Google has so much of the search traffic, this is a threat to all other sites trying to gain traffic and marketshare.
One way I was thinking about this is that a lot of food companies depend on grocery stores to stock their products on their shelves. However, most grocery stores now stock their own version of almost every product in the store. These cheaper generics threaten the sales of the brand items on the shelves. What will happen to the food companies if all the stores decide to become like Trader Joe's where they mainly just stock their own products?

So far, I'm giving Google a pass on all of this. I just love the internet and I love that Google has made it better.
I can't wait for the day when the cable line-up on television is replaced by a Google search engine with all sites/channels accessible.
Yes, Google is buying into a lot of markets, but they also give access to a ton of sites. If Google ever becomes like a cable line-up where they have a set line-up of channels able to be accessed then I will hate them. However, for now, sites are ranked based on popularity and relevance. Asd webmasters, we can't ask for much more than that.

Great points about how the internet has opened things up for millions fo people. I also can't wait for the television screen to be opened up to more competition & channels.
