I am trying to get free traffic for one of my sites. I decided to try posting a few ads on Craigslist to see how much traffic I could get.
After a couple weeks of testing, the result is that posting on Craigslist is not easy.
Craigslists is not happy about internet marketers posting ads on the site. To combat internet marketer spam, Craigslist has put a lot of time and effort into having many obstacles and filters in place to stop multiple postings.
The first step to posting on Craigslist is opening an account. You need a valid email address and now Craigslist also does a phone verification where you put a phone number in and get a verification code from a call or text message.
Once you are logged in, Craigslist puts cookies on your browser so they know how many times you have posted from your computer. This makes it more difficult to use multiple email addresses to post numerous ads in numerous cities.
Craigslist only allows you to post one ad in one city per 48 hours. This limit may chnage, but seems to be the current standard. It is possible to post more ads if you don't post the same exact ad (which kicks off a filter and blocks the posting), but sometimes your "successful" posting of another ad in another city will be deleted later by their "ghosting" filter.
Due to all of these filters and obstacles, posting ads on Craigslist can be a very frustrating process. This is exactly what the programmers at Craigslist want internet marketers to conclude. Their site works best if there are legitimate postings from people who have a product or service they want to trade or sell that can be found easily. The "normal" classified ads will not be easily found if there are millions of ads all over the place for random internet marketer offers.
With these filters and obstacles in mind, the few ads I did manage to get on Craigslist did generate some traffic which did stay on my sites for awhile. So I'll keep my Craigslist account information handy and will probably post a few times a month to add some additional traffic to my sites.
